I had been impatiently waiting for this book since I finished A Fate Inked in Blood last year. It was one of my favorite reads of 2024 and I just knew that it's sequel would not disappoint. And while this one wasn't the 5 star read that the first one was, I still loved it.

The first book ended on such a cliff hanger that it wasn't even funny. Luckily (or unluckily for those of us who had to w “Because I was Freya Born-in-Fire. Daughter of Hlin. Daughter of Hel. And I would weave my own fate.”

The first book ended on such a cliff hanger that it wasn't even funny. Luckily (or unluckily for those of us who had to wait a year), book 2 picks up right where we left off. Freya is headed to Nordeland after having been betrayed by those she holds close. But honestly, what transpires after she gets there is just freaking insane. Jensen is a storytelling genius when it comes to fantasy. And I was here for it every step of the way - even when I wasn't sure how it would end.

I loved all of the Unfated that we meet in this book - and the ones who we already met but got to know better, like Tora. New faves included Guthrum and his familiar Kaja, along with the wolves Hati and Skoll - obviously I have a thing for animals. But it was also interesting to see other children of the Gods and how their powers came to be.

Jensen really took us through the ringer with this one though. There were twists right and left. Just when I thought I had things figured out, something else would come along and throw me off. But I loved that. It kept me on my toes and I never really knew where we were going with everything.

The reason I couldn't quite give this one 5 stars was the beginning. I felt like the unresolved issue that the first book ended on was just dragged out so much in the beginning that it just became repetitive and felt childish. I get that Freya was hurt, and she had a right to be angry. But she was also being very selfish and only caring how things affected her and not anyone else. There was no right answer to anything but her unwillingness to listen or talk about anything just dragged things out way too long.

Overall, loved this duology and can't wait to read more from Jensen!
