Second read: December 2018
Re-reading this book has confirmed for me why I love this series and the TV show so much. The world is well-developed and has so much depth, and urgh it's just so great. So we have a lot going on in this first book. The Hand of the King, Jon Arryn has died, and as King Robert Baratheon has been good friends with Warden in the North, Eddard Stark, for years, he rides North to offer the position to Ned. And things get complicated from there. We have murder conspiracies, w ...more

I definitely liked this better the first time around.
Second time reading, first time reviewing. I get the hype around this book a lot although I’m
Not sure if I’ll dip into the tv series. Set in medieval times with a king and castle and knights and honor, the story mostly revolves around the Stark family with a few POV from characters outside of the family (Tyrion and Danearys). The struggle between honor and family is a common theme in this first book as we see the challenges our people are fac ...more

"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die."
Fantasy is my favorite genre so of course I had to read this series. I don't want to be dramatic but this is probably the best fantasy book I've ever read. There is a magic system and of course dragons (and WOLVES!!) but all of these fantastical elements are not what drives this brilliant story. It is more about the politics of the kingdoms and all of the powerful, morally grey, flawed, and sometimes evil human beings of this world.

So, after watching all 7 seasons of GoT and waiting for the eighth and last season (it's going to be a long wait, sigh!) I've decided to start reading the books.
I think the book and the TV series complement each other very well. The TV show gave us some extras scenes and the visual for all the characters mentioned in the book. (there are a lot of Sers, Ladies and names with their treeline!) But the books give us more character depth. I loved all the different POVs and how the story develops. In ...more
