I've seen this book described as an "intellectual comedy," but it would be more accurate to call it witty fiction. The question of genre, whether it's science fiction or historical fiction, is an intriguing one that harasses you throughout the book (in a good way). It's a clever novel that tells you all the right things and nothing more, and doesn't make too much of itself.
