This one is dark and haunting, half a tribute to falling into art so deeply that it makes love to you and murders you, and half a deep treatise on madness and skirting the far edges of normality, all while feeling very much in one's own skin.
Most of the fun is simply trying to figure out whether it's a ghost story, a Ghost Story, or the ghost of a story, disjointed and cast adrift in time and faulty memory.

For me, this book was all about expectations.
About a year ago, I read and loved The Red Tree. Being a fan of weird fiction TRT was really in my wheelhouse. I added "Drowning Girl" to my tbr but as usual took quite awhile to actually read it. In the interim I started to notice many mixed reviews especially when compared to TRT. I try not to read too many specific reviews before I read a book hoping to go in with an open mind but in this case I think finding out that this book wasn't at all like T ...more

This was such an incredibly weird book. It was really good, but really, really weird. My shelving this time is more representative of how I thought of this book rather than the text itself. I think that's appropriate for this particular one :)

India Morgan Phelps-Imp-, a schizophrenic and therefore highly unreliable narrator, writes her memoir as a way to try to set down the "truth" about her ghost story. This one sentence explains some of the major issues.
1. Imp is schizophrenic. Due to her illness, the reader is constantly asking, Is she off of her meds? Is she just making this s**t up? Imp tries to put the reader at ease with these statements...
