Absolutely wonderful. A story of companionship, loss, regret, hopes and dreams, of a hard and brutal life. I loved Gus most of all the characters. A number of key characters didn't make it and animals too. If you are going to read only one book about cowboys, this is The One to choose.

Brilliant.
If you haven't read this you need to....now.
Don't let the "western" theme scare you. Yes it's set in the west. Yes it involves a cattle drive. But these facts are the just framework for a story of life and death, love and loss and friendship.
Unforgettable characters and moments that will stick with me for a long time.

Lonesome Dove is like The Lord of the Rings in that it follows multiple little groups of people on different journeys over a huge country. Unlike Tolkien's epic, there were no parts of Lonesome Dove where I wanted to get back to other characters (there's only so much Frodo and Sam wandering around Mo ...more

Whew, what a book! A beautiful, tragic, hopeful, majestic book! It reduced me to both tears and fits of giggles throughout the book. These were characters that were incredibly real and they wormed their way right on into your heart.
I've heard about this book for a long time but I was kind of surprised about a couple of things. One was that very little of it takes place in Lonesome Dove. The other is the depth and breadth of the story. There didn't seem to be a single thing in this book that did ...more

This goes right on the favorites shelf. No need to debate, this was just purely a great book. It has everything you'd want in a novel: action, adventure, love, hate, sadness, happiness. It really takes you through an emotional rollercoaster, and there's always a feeling that something sad or happy is right around the corner (and you're never sure which.)
I didn't really expect to love it. I'm not a huge western fan even though I was born and raised in Texas. But I didn't really think of this as ...more
