Fascinating historical fiction detailing one of the first encounters of Spain with the New World and told through the eyes of a slave. Heartbreaking yet hopefully. Beautiful yet brutal. Highly recommend this.

This is an interesting work, recreating the unfortunate and doomed exploration of Florida by Panfilo Navarez and subsequent extraordinary journey of a ragtag band of Spanish hidalgos, settlers, and slaves. We know this story from the account made by Cabeza de Vaca when he finally made it back to northern Mexico, accompanied by the last three of the expedition, including a Moorish slave called Esteban.

This is their journey, as narrated by Esteban - or, as he was rightfully called Mustafa ibn Muh
