I really enjoyed this one!

The Kupari people are the only ones who have access to magic, which is based on either fire or ice. The Valtia is the most powerful magic user, the only wielder of both fire and ice, and queen of the Kupari. Eventually the magic consumes the Valtia and it passes on to the next one chosen by the magic, the Sadella, who becomes the new Valtia and queen in her place.

Elli is the current Sadella and is told that according to prophecy, it is believed that when the current Val I really enjoyed this one!

Eventually the magic consumes the Valtia and it passes on to the next one chosen by the magic, the Sadella, who becomes the new Valtia and queen in her place.

Elli is the current Sadella and is told that according to prophecy, it is believed that when the current Valtia dies and the magic passes into Elli, she will become the most powerful Valtia of all time. However, when the Valtia dies after using an enormous amount of magic to repel an invasion, Elli doesn't feel the promised magic of fire and ice awaken within her. Instead, she feels nothing.

The elders and priests whose job it is to serve and advise the Valtia are not very happy when this happens and essentially turn on Elli. When things look as if they are going to take a very bad turn for Elli, she escapes from the City and takes refuge with a group of outlaw magic wielders. So begins another sort of awakening for Elli as she learns that the Kupari people are not only facing the possibility of another invasion, but a threat that comes from within the very heart of the Kupari people.

You could be their most powerful asset--or their worst enemy

Elli may not be the Valtia, and she may not be a magic wielder, but she does have power, and the question she faces throughout the book is whether she is going to use it or be used by it. In the course of navigating that question, a very exciting tale unfolds, complete with several magical battles large and small. There were lots of interesting characters, including (of course) a romantic interest for Elli, which I thought developed very naturally rather than appearing instantaneously. The magic really steals the show at times, and the contrast of the fire and ice magic made for some great imagery.

The end of the book brings a semblance of closure, but leaves the main question about the whereabouts of the true Valtia open to be resolved in the sequel. As such, you can safely read this book now without feeling like the wait for the next book will be completely agonizing. Obviously I will be reading the sequel! ...more

A YA Fantasy that can't quite decide how YA it wants to be and is a bit hampered by a first person PoV.

Elli is the Saadela, the heir-presumptive of the current Valtia, the Sorcerer-Queen of the Kupari. When the Valtia dies, used up by her magic, the magic will pass to Elli and she will become the new Valtia. Except, she doesn't. And suddenly, she's being accused of being an impostor by the people she has trusted all her life and her life is now at risk. So Elli goes from being a sheltered prince ...more
