Re-read 4/29/18:

Buddy read! But no, that's just a flimsy excuse. I LOVE this series. I think I can re-read it forever. I was okay with it the first time I read the first volume, but the weight of the fantastic quality ever since has justifiably rocketed my love out of the stratosphere.

I can easily say this is my absolute favorite comic of all time. It tears me to pieces with humor and spontaneous sobs. It GETS ME.

Just revisiting the story now is making me see how much is revisited and continued ...more

So I finally got on board and also joined the Saga bandwagon.

The book is about two individuals of different galactic races falling in love and having a baby - which doesn't sit well with either side. Because the two species have been at war for a long time, taking the battles to basically any planet in the known universe (so as not to destroy their own, isn't that nice?!) and having their two races couple and breed is unacceptable.
Thus, the new parents and Hazel, the newborn baby, run away from So I finally got on board and also joined the Saga bandwagon.

Thus, the new parents and Hazel, the newborn baby, run away from basically everyone, encountering strange beings like a ghost babysitter and a spaceship made of lumber.

While this description might sound a bit boring, the story is anything but. Both parents are former warriors, tired of fighting.
The father, it has to be said, is getting a little bit on my nerves with him being so kick-ass but constantly preaching about pacifism. Oh well, maybe that'll change - after all, he did what he had to do to protect his little family so far.
The mother definitely has no inhibitions (which makes for great comedic effects) and it's clear that the authors are not afraid to not let this be PG-13 if you know what I mean (rhyme unintended). It's really refreshing.
Baby Hazel seems to not be omnipotent (thank goodness). We get her comments in some panels as if she told the story in retrospect and at least at one point it's clear that she's wrong about some people. So I have hope the author doesn't make her the generic special snowflake.
The Robot Prince IV, one of the forces trying to kill them and apprehend the baby, has a monitor for his head and suffers from PTSD (nicely visualized for the readers).
Oh, and there is a cat that can tell if you're lying or not (I totally want one).

The book is full of some serious worldbuilding (right down to the brothel planet). It's certainly staggering how many ideas and themes are thrown in and nicely worked out here. Some in dialogues, some in the story and some only for watchful readers paying attention to certain panels.
I can absolutely understand why so many people are in love with this. It's shrill, loud, colourful, silly, insane, creative AF and sweet at its core (with enough foreshadowing to make anyone weep).

The art itself is as gaga as what it depicts but nicely done and beautiful in some places. In fact, it seems like the artist wanted the style to always match what the art was showing in any given chapter / panel. ...more

I think I was expecting to be wowed by this, based on all the reviews. I was not. My reaction was lukewarm. The artwork is good, but the story was serviceable, and honestly, I was surprised at how much casual misogyny there was in the story. I can see why so many people enjoy this series. What an unusual and fascinating premise! What I loved about it the most was the world building. Simply fantastic!

The characters were also diverse and interesting. It sets up the series nicely and opens the door for the series to go in so many exciting directions. Can't wait to move on to volume 2!!!! ...more

4.5/5. Officially joining onto this bandwagon. I bought the first volume, and I suspect the following ones will be appearing on my shelf in short order.

I loved the characters. I loved the imagination in the designs (although the ties to clearly contemporary Earth style puzzled me a bit in a story that's taking place across the galaxy).
