This was surprisingly good and easy novel to get into with a decent SF premise of settlers on an alien world and a genetic plague that reads like any number of YA dystopias, but what makes this one stand apart from all the rest is the twist on psi mind-reading and the Purpose behind the main action.

No spoilers, but there was enough delayed satisfaction going on throughout the novel to keep any jaded reader turning the page. :)

Did I like the characters? Yeah, for the most part, but Todd reads pre

This is another one of these YA blockbusters that one more review really isn't going to add much, so I'll keep it brief.

This is the story of Todd Hewitt, a boy about to become a man, in a world where every man is chaos walking. In this human colony world all men are uncontrollable broadcast telepaths producing what's called Noise. Todd only knows that about men, because in the town where he lives there are no women. UPDATE: I reread this book with my kids after I learned about the movie coming out later this year. I'm settling on the same rating as before. We loved the world building and writing style of the story. Ness does a fantastic job of perfectly aligning his characters with their voice on the page. He creates such beautiful passages!

Loved this when I read it last year, and as read by Humphrey Bower it is even more fantastic. Great narration.

I have mixed feelings about this book - loved the settlers looking for a better life aspect, along with the mysterious "noise" that affects only men, but I was less keen on the religious preachy side of the story.

I give the story itself 3 stars, but the audio (narrated by Nick Podehl) was excellent. I'll give Book 2 a try and see if I want to continue with the series.

Phew! Tense story, and believable main characters. And a good example of how dogma/religion coupled with a lack of education creates a dangerous people/situations.
