Like its predecessor Seraphina, Shadow Scale has some lovely lines in it. Hartman can clearly write. Unfortunately this book as a whole isn't nearly as satisfying as the first one in the duology.

This book was long. I mean, really long. And while Seraphina's and Selda's and Kiggs' relationship continues to grow slowly, it's actually a very small part of this story. Seraphina travels all over the place, finding half-dragons as part of an incredibly naive and, I thought, harebrained idea to protect Goredd from the evil dragons, who happen to hate half-dragons and people. Not often do I find myself with such widely different feelings about a book.
Hartman's sequel to the excellent Seraphina was as exquisitly written, the language beautiful, and often of a lyrical quality. The plot and characters were however very different, and thus quite a shock. Had this novel been written on its own, I would have loved it, but as a sequel, it was very hard to get accustomed to (and to my shame I nearly stopped).
