3.5 rounded up for sheer readability! This is the first book written in the Shadowhunter world created by Cassandra Clare. However I started with the prequel trilogy Infernal Devices, set in Victorian Britain. I really liked that series and found it hard not to compare this book with that. I will definitely be continuing the series and think my preference (at the moment) for Infernal Devices will probably fade with time. So far I would say, that being taken out of the historical/ steampunk conte ...more

It was a good novel for the genre, and I can see why the twilight crowd might latch onto the series with gusto. My only complaint is a regular complaint about novels with an immature girly protaganist with too little knowledge about self-preservation. What is it about modern YA novels turning a standardized horror genre with stupid teenagers dying into stupid teenagers inexplicably powering up and surviving against all reason? I'm saying this even with a healthy respect for all types of internal ...more

2016 original review:
So I realize I'm really late to the party on this one. And yes I really liked it. Don't judge me :). I'm really glad I have the second book ready to go. That was a pretty big bombshell dropped at the end.

Well! The first time I settled to read this book, I managed 85 pages; the second time, I read the remaining 400 pages in one sitting-what does that tell you? I loved this book, its intensity, its complexity, its complications, its numerous threads and sub—threads, emotional confrontations, startling revelations-and I’m in for the series (and the Infernal Devices series as well!)

Many novels and series include the Paranormal; many can make the reader suspend disbelief. “City of Bones” is one of th

This was a fun read. It wasn't amazing, the writing style is just so-so, the dialogue made me cringe many times, and several plot points were very predictable. But, that being said, I enjoyed the world that Cassandra created. She put a lot of thought and creativity into creating a pretty impelling back story that I can see carrying the story through 6 or 7 books if done right. I would have liked to see more character development from some of the minor characters (something Stephen King is AMAZIN ...more

This is an entertaining summer reading. It has a couple of plot devices that would fit in a soap opera, but there is nothing wrong with it if you are looking for a young adult reading just to relax.

The story felt a bit uneven at first but picked up towards the end; enough so that I gave it 4 stars and will go on to the next book.
