“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”
Believed to have been written in 1611, this may have been one of his last plays. The mature bard, he would have been 47 at this time and with only 5 more years left in this world, created in my humble opinion one of his finest plays.
“...and then, in dreaming, / The clouds methought would open and show riches / Ready to drop upon me, that when I waked / I cried to dream again.”

We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.
This was the first time I read Shakespeare in English. I liked the play. But it was so immensely difficult for me to read that it wasn't exactly a lot of fun to do so. Hence the three star rating.
The Tempest is a tale of revenge and forgiveness, with some romance, as well as the occasional moments of poetry and comedy. Pretty enjoyable overall, if one is willing to put a bit of effort into reading it.

Re-read 3/7/25, for the umpteenth time.
Arguably the most beloved of Shakespeare's romances, where 'tis a brave new world to have such people in it--even if they are full fathom five deep.
I simply adore the thin line Prospero walks between devilry and the angels, and the realization that it is love, not hate, that will set not just him, but everyone--free.
It doesn't get better than this. I LOVE redemption tales, no matter how atrociously they've been abused in the past. They still hit hard, and i ...more

This is a play I’ve been wanting to read for AGES! Well, ever since I found out it was the base for the film Forbidden Planet. My grandfather introduced me to that movie when I was a kid, and it became a firm favourite :0)
Coming back to Shakespeare, this play is rather short on plot, compared to others I’ve read. It all centres on revenge, forgiveness, and renouncing one’s magic. All somehow revolves around who ...more

I think I am meant to read this book sometime soon. The books I'm reading all connect to the tempest somehow. It's popping up everywhere lately, I believe it is a sign. So I'll be placing this high on the tbr.

I am listening/watching this on an app on my iPad. Unabridged, with extras. More about the app behind a spoiler tag (which it is not):

This is a three-maybe-four stars because I had to use Wikipedia to figure out what exactly was going on. Then I'm like "They got all of that out of this?" So yeah, I think I'd need multiple rereads and actual studying (ick) to really understand what was going on. But it had three to four star potential ;)

Story-wise it's good, but not my favorite. The language is beautiful though. There are some great lines!
