It's a competent sequel, feeling both less shrieky and less like hunger games, and I really can't fault the direction that the characters are forced into.
I mean, they just sparked a revolution... and the empire struck back.
It was a novel of setbacks, if you can count being tortured for most of a novel a setback. And I mean the characters, not us, dear reader. It wasn't a bad read, and I usually don't care much for prolonged questioning, but it was done interestingly, so again I can't complain.

Buddy Read with Lys-A-Book and Kare. Thank you, lovelies ♥♥
Let me begin by saying that I wished there were a POV of Helene in book 1, and I’m so glad this book has hers. Also, this is the review of Book 2, so if you haven’t read the first one, I’d suggest you don’t read this as it might have spoilers for that one.
After three weeks, my world has narrowed to sucking in the next breath, forcing myself to take the next step, finding the will to do it again.

I was not a big fan of An Ember in the Ashes, and having been underwhelmed by the first book, I almost gave this second book a pass. But, as it turns out, I really enjoyed A Torch Against the Night.
I notice a few reviewers grumbling about this suffering from middle book syndrome, but for me, it felt like the characters were so much better developed than in the first book. Especially welcome was the introduction of Helene Aquilla as a POV character; a great move by the author that really made the ...more

Having enjoyed the previous book, An Ember in the Ashes, I was more than happy to read this. Sadly, it suffered from my schedule, back to school September which meant that I didn't always have the time or energy to read. Nevertheless, it was gripping.
The previous leads are back and entertaining. There is peril, a spot of romance, loyalty and betrayal. Allegiances are developed but others split asunder. We are also given an extra lead, Helene. Her story line is fascinating.

4.5 stars
A great sequel to An Ember in the Ashes. Loved everything about it: the plot, the twist and turns, the character development (though I'm still not a big fan of Helene…), de adventures, the magic, the different POVs. Can't wait to read #3! ...more

This book would have been a three star book for me, but the ending was really good and left me excited for the last book in the series.
It almost felt as if I was reading two separate books. The first half often dragged for me, with the characters taking a long time to reach their destination. I felt we didn't learn that much about them, and there wasn't anything drawing in my attention. The only parts of the book that held interest for me were Helene's sections, since this was the first book wh ...more

This story had a three star beginning for me and a five star ending. I felt like it was quite YA at first - there was a lot of love-angst, and of course the obligatory love triangle. But it became so much more than that, and characters and plots went ways I never would have predicted. I liked Helene's point of view the most by far - the addition of her as a major character was fantastic, and found myself consistently hurrying through the other two characters' stories so that I could get back to

It seems that I can't read this without something getting in the way; this time it's covid-highness.

In this book, they ALL got on my nerves. Still a good book though. Can't wait to read the 3rd.
I knew there was a reason I didn't trust or like a certain character. I felt totally justified when my suspicions were proven right.
Honestly, I think this is all I can write without spoiling anything. ...more
