The verb to describe my reading of this book is ‘limp’ as in ‘I limped through it’. This was not my first go round with this book- for some reason I’ve always felt that I should like it, and would like it if I only persevered. Well I did persevere and I still don’t like it. It should tick all my boxes:historical fiction✔️reincarnation✔️ philosophy ✔️ metaphysics✔️but sadly it is still just a damp squib (whatever that actually means!)

Wonderful! Ursula Todd relives her life several times, with little things changing each time, based on decisions she makes. With each new iteration of her life, we see a slightly different Ursula Todd, as well as getting a better picture of the rest of her family. Though this story has a fantasy aspect in the use of repeated lives, this was also a terrific historical story, taking England from just before WWI to the late sixties, at certain critical junctures in Ursula's life. This is one of those books with a gimmick, and for once the gimmick is genuinely fascinating. The idea of being able to live your life over and over - to correct the decisions leading to early death - is a compelling one, and Atkinson places her heroine Ursula front and centre in the massive drama of WWI & WWII era Britain (and occasionally Germany).
