This one is a bit hard to rate, but what it comes down to is that I didn’t like it nearly as much as I thought I would.
The premise is really good, although I truly wish people would stop referring to Mulan, because Mariko's story is nothing like the Mulan of Chinese legend. There were a couple of things that were a bit off in terms of what the book takes from Japanese culture (the description of the tea ceremony comes to mind), but really, I understand that this is inspired fiction, and not hist ...more

3.5 that I'm rounding up, because it was enjoyable enough that I read it in one afternoon. But, it was also a bit of a muddled book, without a particularly clear explanation of any of the important plot points and/or magic/mythology being invoked. That being said, I'm quite sure I'll read the next one, and I liked our heroine and Okami.
