What Members Thought

What I love most about Pratchett's books is that under a thin layer of funny footnotes-peppered pun-heavy parody lies the core of deep seriousness rooted in the quite sobering understanding of the shallow pettiness of human mundanity fueled by jealousy, bile, spite, and closemindedness.
"There was a thoughtful pause in the conversation as the assembled Brethren mentally divided the universe into the deserving and the undeserving, and put themselves on the appropriate side."In the end, the onl ...more

This is one of my favorite Discworld books.
I submit that the best way to rate a Discworld book is with a smile meter. As you read, imagine that there is a meter whose arrow jumps when you smile, moves further right when you chuckle and spikes into the red eleven when you laugh out loud.
Pratchett’s 1989 Discworld novel (his 8th in the series and 1st of the City Watch sub-series) made me smile all the way through the book, chuckle frequently and laugh out loud two or three times.

Re-Read 4/29/24:
Slow and easy into the fantasy trappings, only to realize it becomes -- as I've found out 3 other times before -- a hilarious police procedural that skirts the edge of satire and slams us in the face with sweet idealism.
Welcome to Ankh-Morpork. Watch for dragons.
Original Review:
Dragons and kings and cross-dressing night watch. What can go wrong?
Meet Terry Pratchett, who can turn anything, and I mean, anything, on its head. :)
On this re-read, what I remember to be a less funny bo ...more

This eighth Discworld novel was a delight!
I hadn't known the Night Watch until now and couldn't imagine loving any character as much as Granny Weatherwax but there we are. Sam Vimes as well as his ragtag band of misfits (Sgt. Colon, Nobby Nobbs, & Carrot Ironfounderson) are hilarious when stumbling through Ankh-Morpork that is currently beset by a gigantic fire-spitting dragon.
Dragons, even on the Disc, are supposed to be extinct. Well, the reader is informed that they simply went to a different ...more

This is an update to the below review from my listen to the 2023 audio version of the story primarily narrated by Jon Culshaw.
The story is still brilliant, and I've read it enough times now for that not to be any form of surprise. As for the narration, I think Culshaw captures some characters very well, and feels a bit off for others. He has a growling style that should suit a story about gutter policing really well, but doesn't quite hit it for me. I'll move onto the next Guards book and see ho ...more

“Someone out there was about to find that their worst nightmare was a maddened Librarian. With a badge.”
My first Pratchett book - finally!
Had no idea what to expect, apart of course from the author’s huge reputation, which did worry me a little. What if I didn’t like it?… Pfew! I DID like it :O)
The first thing that hit me was Pratchett’s writing style, full of metaphors, puns and irony. What looks like silliness is in fact very clever and comical. The play on words and cliches (as well as many ...more

*Reposting today* RIP Terry Pratchett 1948-2015

In late 2007, Terry Pratchett was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
I was very young at the time but I still remember it happening because one of my cousins is a huge fan of Sir Terry. It was devastating to her. Now, almost 7 years later, it is devastating to me too.
Alzheimer's is a serious issue on my father's side of the family. We usually go to the family cemetery on Memorial Day weekend with some of my older great aunts and uncles. So ...more

I look forward to my monthly dose of Discworld each month now. There's always just the right amount of humor to keep my spirits up, especially in these dark and drizzly winter months.

This is my new favorite Discworld book. It was really a fun and funny story!
One of my re-read favorite quotes: “If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.” ...more

Nice change of pace. First "discworld" book I have read. It's good to read a book that doesn't take itself too seriously.
