4.5 stars. I have a soft spot for this particular Christie. This is the first story I read by this grande dame when I was a kid and had exhausted ALL the Nancy Drews and other mysteries aimed at kids in the library. The librarian recommended Agatha Christie to me, and this was where I started with Christie's large catalogue.
I found the plot riveting then and still so now, so many years and books later.

“If one could order a crime as one does a dinner, what would you choose? . . . Let’s review the menu. Robbery? Forgery? No, I think not. Rather too vegetarian. It must be murder—red-blooded murder—with trimmings, of course.”
Our favourite Belgian detective is back, as well as Hastings, challenged by a new criminal mind that seems bent on killing people alphabetically. Instead of having a little group of people where all could be the murderer, we are met with no viable culprit. Or is it? After all ...more

Another good one! This was quite different from the other Poirots I've read so far with there being a serial killer on the loose and Poirot trying to figure out what type of personality this man (or woman) would have, and then trying to get ahead of and prevent the next murders from happening. The reveal was a complete surprise to me and I didn't even come close on this one. But seeing that the murder had so intricately plotted the various murders, I am not surprised that I didn't figure this on

I really like mysteries and I'm a fan of Poirot, but unfortunately this one isn't my favorite. It started out very well with a nice twist and I was sure this wóuld be one of my favorites: why had the murderer chosen Poirot to write to, how would Poirot manage to be in time to prevent the next murder, why did the murderer choose to follow the alphabet when choosing his victims? Unfortunately the end was a bit of a let down. (view spoiler) ...more

Reviewed this book when I listened to the Dutch edition: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I did like the English narration, by Hugh Fraser, a lot more than the Dutch one though. I'm even tempted to round this one up to 4 stars…. Will have to sleep on it…

This book is very good. But it is more of a serial killer thriller, and that is 1000% not my preferred genre. I get too scared. I only read it because I am making my way through all of the Hercule Poirot books. All of that being said, it is really well done. The scope of this one is so wide as compared to Christie’s other books. Hercule Poirot was of course wonderful, if a little more disconcerted by these crimes than he usually is. And Hastings came to visit! I always love precious Hastings. I
