Given the mixed reception this book got I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I ended up enjoying it immensely.

The book felt like it was full of so much detail, and that the story was building up to a larger finish. We know from the outset that the main character, Tea, becomes powerful and also kind of frightening. She is also pretty angry about something.

These sections of Tea in the present are short and alternate with the main part of the story, which relates the events of Tea's early l

3.5 rounded up.I definitely preferred this on a second reading although I still have a few issues with the pacing. I didn’t really connect much with Tea but I enjoyed the concept of the magic- the asha, the dark asha, the faceless, the daeva, the Deathseekers- the world building and cultural context was good.

A very slow start with lots of slow world building to describe the complicated political, magical and necromantic setup and stakes. I thought that this book was perhaps 90% setup for the coming books, and while I liked it (particularly the conversations between the bard and the dark asha (sp? This is such an interesting book with SO much going on that I'm going to try to list a few of the things I like about this book rather than do a narrative which you can read in the summary!

1. This book is told in 2 alternating points of view. One is told by a Bard who is telling the story of an Asha. The second is told from Tea's point of view. Tea is the Asha that the Bone Witch is telling the story of. I thought this was done very well.

Tea discovers she is a bone witch when she raises her brot

Magic and adventure, a combination that appeals to me. So I loved the premise, loved Fox and Mykaela, but found the pace a bit uneven. Now and again the story fell flat, making me lose my focus. As some reviews have stated, perhaps this first instalment is more of a set up for the books to come. Liked the narration, though not the voice she used for Tea, making her sound like a little brat at times.

I enjoyed this a lot initially but then didn't have time to pick it up for a few days and my interest started waning. I'll probably try the next book as it's at the library... ...more
