This sequel is better than the first in several ways, but I should mention that I really enjoyed the way the reveals kept dropping and kept us guessing in the first.

This one, however, moves us into Janel's storyline and has a delightful setup of actually Telling the story within the story in a way that tickled many of my clever narrative fancies. The asides and commentaries were great.

Khirin meets the utterly wonderful Count Janel and her friend father Qown at this book’s outset.
Count Janel, whom Khirin met in the afterlife, features prominently in this book, as we follow her journey, destroying demons in the afterlife by night, and fighting wrongdoing during the day.
Janel and the Qown recount their many trials and problems before arriving at the tavern, with magic, undead people, dragons, demons and murderous relatives.

I listened to the first half of this and it took its toll; I just drifted off whenever one of the narrators took a turn. I also listened to other books between it and then had to finish three others that I was reading, having decided to actually read it myself! The book moved from ‘okay’ to ‘good’ quite quickly after taking this decision.
