Really enjoyed this romance-fantasy-mystery, on all three fronts.
The premise of a political alliance through marriage between two disparate cultures piqued my curiosity, even more so when one was beyond restrictive and the other its opposite. Thankfully most of the action takes place in the latter, Meadows creating a fascinating and complex society in Tithena where gender and sexuality are seen in a liberal way. This is my 2023 reread of this prior to reading the second book in the series.

3.5-4. A sweet, arranged-marriage romance which, unusually, doesn't rely on the hate-love transition. A little too long for my liking - or the plots requirements - but I liked the characters and Tithena's more liberal social set up so I wasn't too bothered by this. I did find myself more interested in the mute Markel and his relationship with Velasin than I did with Velasin's relationship with Caethari, but that may be because I have a fascination for sign language and was intrigued by the way t
