I have heard this called a coming of age story, but I think that is a misnomer. This is less a narrative than a layering of impressions created by the memory of growing up in Brooklyn, black, female, in the 1970s, part of a close group of girlfriends. Time with her brother for the funeral of their father bookend the memories, connecting past and present in a coil of mutual interpretation. I fell in love with Jacqueline Woodson as soon as I read Brown Girl Dreaming. Her writing is beautiful & eloquent. Another Brooklyn pulls on your heart strings and you find yourself reminiscing about your childhood relationships. What I love about this story is the authenticity of the era, the setting and complexity of friendships. Woodson's prose makes you feel the essence of the characters pain as they are coming of age in Brooklyn during the 70's. ...more

Beautiful. Deep. Nostalgic. This book swallowed me up and when it spit me out I was overcome with emotion, wanting more of August's life.
Woodson is a literary genius. One of my new favs.

It's hard to stop thinking about August, Gigi, Angela and Sylvia. How their friendship was not so much of a choice as a necessity to navigate the dangerous waters of becoming a women. Although they were in the streets of Brooklyn, unfortunately most women will relate to their experiences and thoughts no matter when or where we grew up. I will continue to contemplate this story long after closing its cover. ...more

I really rated this a 3.5 - don’t get me wrong - it’s fast paced and worth a quick read.
It was definitely thought provoking especially at the end.
