Absolutely loving The God of Small Things, I could not wait to read her long-anticipated second novel. What a disappointment. Rather than a particular story which revealed the universal, we were given a sprawling story of modern India, its brutal treatment of the people of Kashmir, its disregard for the poor in its cities, its marginalized transgender communities, its ambivalent attitudes toward the role of women, etc., etc., which incorporated specific narrative fictions.
