hello there, little romance. i see you! you are trying to hide, aren't you? well you picked some good camouflage, i must say. you've concealed yourself within a fairly operatic setting: the tale of an immortal teenage cyborg employed by a secretive and futuristic Company, sent on missions in our far-flung past to save extinct plants, waiting for the day that your future finally catches up with your employer's apparently golden present. it is quite a setting, i almost didn't see you there! you ar ...more

A really incredible book, possibly the best book in the Company series. Mendoza is saved from the dungeons of the Inquisition to become an immortal cyborg working for Dr.Zeus, a company that has harnassed both immortality and timetravel. For her first trip to "the field", she travels to Tudor England to rescue rare plants from extinction. Unfortunately for her, she falls utterly in love with a remarkable mortal man--who is devoutly Protestant when Queen Mary takes the throne. Mendoza observes th ...more

My mother has been telling me to read this book for years, and of course she was right. It's a good concept, made better by the character the author chose to tell the story. A nice balance of time-travel SF and historical fiction, vividly described. ...more

I'm torn about this book. On one hand, I really enjoyed the premise of this novel, the main character's voice, and Mendoza's interactions with her fellow operatives. On the other, Mendoza suddenly flipped from hating mortal humans to loving one (apparently, from what I could gather, because he smells good and is pathogen-free), and that development made me put the book down for a few weeks in disgust. If she'd changed her mind more gradually, I would have liked the book much more.

REREAD #1: 5 April 2016 -

Joining in with a Tor.com readalong of the Company series. Oooh, I did enjoy my reread of this books. Stefans, who is running the readalong, is doing a good, deep reading of what's going on and bringing up lots of points I hadn't considered, which is lovely.

I read the books so fast the first time (I couldn't wait to find out what happened) that this slower reading is very enjoyable. Although I admit that when I got two chapters from the end I just kept going to the fini

The idea of the company is an interesting concept. it sets the stage in ths book for a love story that is the centerpiece of the book.

31 May 2011: I just re-read this, as a GR group I belong to will be reading it in July. It's definitely interesting to re-read this in light of knowing how the series ends and where everything was going. It makes some of the things the characters said entirely different, and eerie in places.

That said, I still think that this book lacks something. I adored the immediate sequel, Sky Coyote, and recommend it to anyone thinking of reading this series, but this still doesn't do it for me.

2.5 stars. The premise of this book (and the whole series) is really original and clever and I thought the introduction of the main character was very well done. That said, the story after that dragged on and we didn't get to learn enough about "the Company." I will certainly read the next book and have high hopes that the inner workings of the Company will play a much bigger role.

This book felt like an historical romance novel with a nod to SciFi; not my cup of tea

I read this in ebook version. i really enjoyed this book. i haven't read a lot of science fiction, so i don't really have much to compare it to in that respect, but i thought this was great. i liked the blending of history with the modern future technologies. i definitely look forward to reading more books in this series. ...more
