A clever take on the untold story of the Witches of Oz! A most excellent read!
I found it hard to get through this book, yet I kept coming back to it because I just HAD to know...
The first two parts of this book captivated me. I loved the way that Maguire fleshed out the land of Oz with all it's various peoples, and although some people may have found it boring, I could hardly put the book down. By contrast, the final part was a bit of a disappointment to me. I understood what Maguire was trying to do, but I felt like a few things were rushed through too much and the emotional impact was lost so that Elphaba's later actions seemed not quite right. I love reimagined fairy tales, and enjoyed this. Points deducted for the ending, which I thought could have been done better. I've found that to be the case with most of his books I've read since then: solid first three quarters, somewhat weaker ending.

I stuck with this for a while, but ... (a) stories that spend too much time evoking the cliqueishness of high school just irritate me lately and (b) most of the characters were just ... not that exciting.
I'm stuck in the middle. Not sure if I'll keep reading. Maybe when I start it again some other time I'll be more in the mood for this book.
