I discovered Martha Wells through a writer's blog, but I had never read this first story about Nicholas. I like complicated characters and Nicholas is certainly that.
The story kept me riveted from start to finish and I was only disappointed there wasn't more. I always did want to know about Arisilde and the sphere and now I have that information.

Very complex, densely woven story of Nicholas Valiarde and his attempt to exact revenge on the man he holds responsible for his foster father's unjust conviction and execution for necromancy ten years earlier.

Disappointing. The characters were lame at best (I did like the opium-addict magician), and the main character’s angst-ridden past and romance were boring and stiffly written. Even the plot didn’t hold my interest. Read her other books instead. This is a precursor to a trilogy, set in the same world...we'll see. ...more
