I've done a lot of odd jobs over the years. At one point, back before I got my degree and I was still working to put my wife through school, I worked as a delivery driver for a company that sold construction supplies - 50 lb boxes of powdered Kool-Aid, portable generators, hammers, safety harnesses, 2x4's, circular saws. Mysterious aliens make contact with earth just as humans are about to launch their first ships into space. The so-called Overlords put an end to all war and nationalism, hunger and poverty. At the same time, human ingenuity seems to stagnate as well, and the purpose of these Overlords, though seemingly benign, remains mysterious.

This felt kind of like Foundation to me, in that it isn't really one fully united story, with a single set of protagonists, like you would normally expect. Instead, it spans a bit more time than the average novel, and features three different storylines that all address a common thread: the Overlords.

For me, the first section was the best. The plotline of the children dragged for me, despite its necessity. And then the conclusion, with Jan, briefly rose high, but didn't quite manage to outweigh
