I've done a lot of odd jobs over the years. Mysterious aliens make contact with earth just as humans are about to launch their first ships into space. The so-called Overlords put an end to all war and nationalism, hunger and poverty. This felt kind of like Foundation to me, in that it isn't really one fully united story, with a single set of protagonists, like you would normally expect. Instead, it spans a bit more time than the average novel, and features three different storylines that all address a common thread: the Overlords.
