I found the beginning of the book a bit hit and miss, and I felt the emphasis on Lessa's "power" didn't fit with what we learn as the series progresses. However, it picked up and tightened up as the book continued, and by the end I was a Pern fan all over again. Part of me wants to pick up Dragonquest right away, but I'll get some other things read/finished first.

Maybe I'll write a real review tomorrow. I get why this broke some ground in the sixties. Character-based, and with a female character taking initiative. I had some issues with it, but I liked Lessa's character. And the dragons were pretty cool.

I really wanted to like this book because it is classic dragon fantasy. The opening few chapters were gripping, if somewhat confusing. But midway through the book, the story turned to a catalog of events rather than a story. The author uses a lot of her own words so in the beginning it is difficult to understand what she is describing. Then we get a series of events that feel like clips from a movie than a story. I tried to listen to the audio version of this, but just could not get into it. I had read & enjoyed Dragonsdawn thinking it was the first book written in the Pern universe. When I realized it wasn't the first, I decided to go back & start from the beginning, but I did not like this at all. I really didn't care about the characters or what happened. And I didn't like the writing style. I might try one more Pern book that was written later in the series, maybe the writing will have improved for m
