Definitely will be reading more Recluce. I enjoyed Haze which is the only other Modesitt I have read, but this had better characterization (and character development), and the world was more clearly defined.

This is a comfort read for me. Lerris is exiled from Recluse (home of magicians who work in Order) for asking too many questions and being too unreliable. During his time in the outside world, he slowly realizes why Recluse is the way it is--and why he can never go back. Probably the best of the Recluse series.

I thought this was a decent book. I think it has some nuances I probably didn't fully appreciate, because I was in a bit of a hurry. If I had first read this when I was, say, 15, I think I would have had a much stronger appreciation for it. The references to chaos and order made me think of Amber a bit. Also, as others have noted, the onomatopoeia was a bit much.
