As a rule I don't tend to pick up multi-volume fantasy epics. I'm glad this was nominated for the Nebula, inspiring me to read it. It's a compelling story set in a fascinating world, well-told. The narrative layers unfold beautifully. I found myself more and more interested in the characters and the world with every page. Would be a five star read except for my grumpiness about to-be-continued. I want to read the next one now. My favorite Jemisin book to date.

REREAD #1: 21 September 2021 - 24 September 2021 (10/10)
I reread this as part of a readalong on YouTube. It was just as fantastic the second time - maybe even more so as I could pick up so many things that I didn't know were important the first time. It was also great to be part of a livestream discussing it with others. Highly, highly recommended.

Another month, another read for the Hugo/Nebula winners bookclub. And may I say, this is a read that is long overdue? N.K. Jemisin took the SFF world by storm when she started this series, so I'm kind of ashamed that I've taken this long to get to it.

A very well written, well told story, and I only regret that it's part of a series of books that has yet to be written. The story is something of a jumble that may turn some readers off at first. It is non linear, told from three different viewpoints and using all three narrative voices. It takes a little getting used to (particularly the rarely used second person mode). But, the whole is a weaving of rich, vivid storytelling that will draw you in.

Really enjoyed this!
On the other hand, it's one of those books where you get to the end and abruptly discover it's time to go get the sequel if you want to find out what happens. It's after midnight, and past time to go to bed, but I want to know what happens.

Liked the rather unusual mix of styles and world building here. Not a huge fan of fantasy but could see this as distant Earth future SF, Clarke’s saying that all sufficiently advanced science can appear as magic allowed me to relax, suspend disbelief and thoroughly enjoy this story.
