What Members Thought

I'm pretty sure everyone and their dog is going to read this regardless of my "review" so I thought I'd shake things up (don't hold your breath). I'm going to go through some of the thoughts I had while reading it, make some comparisons, essentially not have any cohesion or flow to this review whatsoever. (As if I would do a review like this out of laziness, come on!)

Generations after humanity withdrew from the toxic surface of Earth, the societies of the various Spires are in a constant battle for supremacy. At times the conflict simmers below the surface, but as the book begins it erupts into open warfare yet again.
The basic premise is cool. The writing doesn't do it justice. The way the etherealists and cats are written made me flat out hate them, and the other characters aren't written much more believably. I do like the character archetypes Butcher drew ...more

Jim Butcher has learned the wisdom that you should figure out what you do well, and then do that.
I found the rather popular Dresden Files books terribly disappointing. While there were hints of talent in the books, for me the good parts were buried under all the things that just didn't work for me - the unlikeable brooding character, the fact that Butcher just couldn't make detective noir work with his writing style or characterization or plotting, the RPG inspired tropes that seemed to thrust ...more

I really loved the beginning of The Aeronaut’s Windlass. I though it had it all. The world building was interesting and different. It was blended into the story and did not interfere with the action. The same with the back-story. Everything started with a bang and it just kept going non-stop.
As I met each character their actions showed their personality. As the story progressed they became more complex and better
developed.

A winner in the end. Found it slower to get into than some of his other books but once the characters evolved I was able to get into it. As an animal lover, I appreciated the sentient cat and the alternate and parallel society. I greatly admire how he can build a new world and allow one to slip into it without tongue twisting inventions or your being aware of it.
