There's truly a lot to enjoy here, especially if you're a fan of philosophy and moles.
Sometimes together. No, no, scratch that. You can't separate the philosophy from the moles.
Every captain must have a philosophy to chase after, and truly, it DOESN'T REALLY MATTER if you're missing an arm or a leg, Okay? Just trust me on this. Don't go chopping off perfectly good appendages just because some bloody mole popped out of one of the seven layered seas and ruined my perfectly happy steampunk reverie. ...more

Huh! I just learned two things. When an author uses a 'descriptive' name for a character, there's a term for that: aptronym, probably coined in the 1930s by newspaper columnist Franklin P. Adams. There's also a phrase for when a person has a name which relates to their chosen profession: nominative determinism.

An absolutely stunning piece of work from Mieville, inventive and crazy and thoughtful and funny. The story of young Sham ap Soorap, apprenticed as assistant to a doctor aboard the hunting train Medes, roving the impossible sea of tangled rail lines that fill the flat earth between islands and continents is written with such skill and verve that suspension of disbelief for even this absurdity is effortless.

A beautifuly written book complete with illustrations by the author. Billed as a Young Adult novel, it is captivating to this old SF fan as well. The only real give away to it's being for younger readers is the tendency to not pursue menacing and potentially gruesome scenes to an unhappy conclusion. Also no sex. But the retelling of Moby Dick in a far flung future scenario with burrowing giant moles instead of whales is fascinating and propels the reader along. It is a great device which compell

I enjoyed this book massively. I've read a fair bit of China Mieville and enjoyed most of them, more or less, but this one is, for me, exceptional. The idea of the Railsea is just so imaginative and unusual and fascinating, the plot is exciting and drives forward, the characters are wonderful. But it's the little things that raise it above most other books I've ever read - the use of & rather than "and" for very deliberate reasons, the meta-writing, the chapter construction, and many other point

My first thought: Moby Dick with railroads and giant moles? Really? But this is absolutely brilliant. The narrative moves along, interspersing action with factual historical or natural science discussions a la Melville, but with an undercurrent of humorous absurdity and more than a nod to Melville's contemporaries. Totally hooked me.
