Very good epic fantasy that gets out of its own way. Only the basic world building frees the reader to invest in plot and characters.

Wow! What a thrilling portrayal of an alternate magic system! I admit that I would like the pace of the book to be faster at times but...! Can't wait for the next one! ...more

I loved the world-building in this, and how new details of the world are slowly revealed throughout the series. I did feel that the story was a bit too slow - maybe burdened by too many point of view characters? - but I still greatly enjoyed the story, and I am excited to see what happens to these characters next (particularly Kamala).

I liked this book but it took me a while to get into it. I had a difficult time connecting with the characters. Then about 2/3 of the way it really started to pick up. I developed more of a connection to the characters and the plot started to come together better. The concept behind how magic is used by witches and Magisters is different and interesting. I am definitely curious to see what happens in the next book.
