Guy Gavriel Kay is a gifted storyteller, and A Brightness Long Ago is a well-told story. The characters are not cast as heroes or villains, but as people with strengths and flaws, passions and fears, all too human in their motives and actions. Kay’s female characters are as complex and compelling as his male characters.

I loved every single word in this book. Beautiful writing, fascinating story. The focus on memory, on the memories of youth, on the part each one plays on the larger tapestry of life, on the disappointments and triumphs in every human story - I am overwhelmed. I think I am going to turn around and read it again this time a bit more slowly to savor the brightness.

Danio Cerra has both a curse and a blessing. He lives in interesting times. He also plays a part in those times. This is a lyrical telling as Danio remembers a time in his youth and the people he meet and interacted with. A journey filled with danger and tension that changes Danio's life. ...more
