Me? Giving 5* to a Lovecraftian horror?! What is the world coming to? It's the end of times indeed. Somehow, Clark managed to make me swallow my dissatisfaction with cosmic horror, and absorbed me into a fantastic, gripping novella. Even teared up at parts! I think a lot of it my usual revulsion was waylaid, ironically, by the generous helping of body horror, a genre I can never quite resist. The descriptions were vile and so, so much fun. The way Clark also weaves the horror through actual hist

Lovecraftian horror meets Jim Crow south with touches of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The premise is basically contemporary politics--three badass black women doing their best to save the world against forces of hatred and white supremacy. My complaints can be mostly boiled down to: I wanted more. This is a short read, and while it can be good not to overstay one's welcome, I felt like I wasn't super engaged with the characters because I saw so little of them ...more
