Absofreakinglutely delightful. (That's for the benefit of all of our 8-year-olds in the audience.)
I honestly didn't know what to expect with Cargill's latest, be it great Fae fantasy or great Robot SF, but having just re-read Sea of Rust and getting a taste of pre-and-current robo-apocalypse in Day Zero, all tied in with a much later timeline of Sea of Rust, I really can't get much happier than this.

Day Zero is set in the same world as the author’s Sea of Rust. That book was about a post-apocalyptic future when humans have been exterminated for a few decades and machine with artificial intelligence are the only thing remaining "alive" on the planet. Sea of Rust briefly goes over the events that ended up in the extinction of the human race, explaining that a human religious sect based in Florida started the war by using an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to exterminate all the machine intelligen

I am such a fan of C. Robert Cargill - both books and movies. I really enjoyed Sea of Rust so I was excited to return to that world.
Day Zero was so touching! I was not expecting a book with so much heart! I loved following a young protagonist and his AI nanny. I also loved seeing the AI uprising from this perspective.
I'm sure you can read this without reading Sea of Rust first, but I did love the "prequel" perspective.

also because I liked Sea of Rust

Well, yes, it's not quite just another Robot Uprising book. But still, too many pages spent on the battle scenes. And a lot of failures of plausibility. I did enjoy reading about Pounce and Ezra though, especially the exploration of how bad stuff can one do to survive, and still be one of the good guys, and still be worthy of life. Would've made a great novelette.

Robots that are disposable, for their human owners anyway. Is it love or loyalty, or programming that keeps the various domestics, staff and Nannybots on the job? And what about that “kill switch”?
