Stephen is one of the last surviving paladins of a recently dead God. Grace is a perfumer still haunted by her apprenticeship and early marriage. They meet and immediately each starts thinking how much they like the other one but are undeserving of love. This goes on for two hundred pages until at last the subplots rear up and there's a bit of action.

Oh, this was lovely! A romantic fantasy featuring a haunted paladin of a dead god and a talented perfumer. Add some severed heads, political conspiracy, an adorable domesticated civet, camaraderie, and Feelings, and this book is an absolute delight.
This was a lot of fun! My first ever fantasy-romance-mystery, but it won't be my last. Kingfisher pulls off the feat of weaving coziness, eldritch horror, romance, action, and political intrigue into a coherent whole that just feels good to read.
