A solid retelling of a Tuatha Dé Danann legend that overlaped with the Arthurian. The focus is on female strength, LGBTQ, and the spirit of magic.
While this isn't particularly new, the writing is strong and beautifully told.
I want to say it is the best I have ever read, but I have read a seemingly endless line of great, if diminished Irish gods and Arthurian legends. For someone who hasn't dived deep into the literature, I do recommend this. It is both new and it speaks of modern sensibilities ...more

Nicola Griffiths is one of my auto-read authors nowadays, so I was excited to receive the ARC from Netgalley, TOR.com and Griffith in exchange for an honest review, which I am more than happy to give. I actually decided to listen to the audio, which I borrowed from the library, read by the author instead of the ARC text, because I have very little time for eye-reading these days. However, I am going to purchase the hardcover, because I loved it so much and love Griffith"s writing so much I want

Basically, what if Percival was a gay woman raised by a witch mother in a hidden cave? She has Arthurian adventures, but they're very solidly set in a precise time and place (Griffith has done her research, both archaeological and historical) and of course from a different point of view than the usual oh-so-innocent Christian hero. Enjoyable! I wish it were a bit longer, particularly near the end when a great deal happens in not that many pages. I'd have loved to see a little more of Peretur and

I’d been meaning to read more of Nicola Griffith’s work since I read Ammonite a couple of years ago (checks Goodreads: almost exactly six years!), but had not quite got around to it, so when I saw that one of my Goodreads groups was reading Spear, and the audiobook was on special offer when bought with the ebook, it seemed like the perfect time.

Fun quick read
Loved the unexpected take on the legend. Loved the embedded history and legendary characters. I liked the unconventional and the pacing in the story, which I consumed in hours, as fast as I could read. The Author’s notes were fascinating and provided lots of insight as well. There is so much depth to these stories that every new perspective is a gift.
