Dragon's Egg is a cross between Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement and Microcosmic God by Theodore Sturgeon. In my opinion it rates right up there with them both.
The story is about the discovery of a neutron star close enough to visit. While the team sent to study the neutron star are busy learning all they can about this mysterious visitor, unbeknownst to everyone there is a native civilization of creatures developed to live on the neutron star. I thought this was an excellent book The concept was brilliant. A neutron star with a race of cheela who's 100 years is equal to one hour of our lives. A research space ship from earth finds them and the rest is a fantastic story. I must admit a lot of the science was somewhat beyond me, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. I have now ordered the sequel, Starquake. This book was printed in 1980 and I gather didn't get a fair shake of the stick. ...more
