a protagonist, Shadow. calm, collected, quiet, passive, cagey, a tough guy and a sensitive guy. his life has been about reacting and not impacting. he moves through his story as if through a dream; tragedies and betrayals and mysteries and confidence games, the beginnings and endings of hope and love and life - all viewed as if through water, as if these terrible wonders were happening to someone else. he could be nothing more than a pawn in life - let alone a pawn of the gods - but yet his pass

2.5. Start date approximate. I was asking some gaming buddies if they had any light reading recommendations. By that I apparently meant "not depressing." This doesn't really qualify but I kept reading it anyway.
Apparently this was supposed to overwhelm me with its mythic scope? It didn't really work for me sadly. I think part of the problem was that Case of the Toxic Spell Dump is already occupying the "Gods Need Prayer Badly + America as melting pot" headspace for me. Even though almost everyon ...more

A great story, I'm kind of torn about who to recommend it for. The Greeks, Romans, Incas all have their own gods. Why can't we? The premise of the book is the role an ordinary human, seemingly un-godly, is thrust into a role in defining the ultimate battle.

Overall I enjoyed this book (once I got into it!), but I didn't love it. I found that it meandered until we got to Lakeside, but I imagine that's representative of Shadow's lack of focus.
I felt too detached from Shadow, even though that was somewhat just his character at least according to Neil Gaiman, to end up caring too much about what happened to him. The only times I got any sense of emotion from him was in his interactions with Laura.

It's more of a 3.5. I suppose I expected something more. Maybe had there not been so much hype around this book I would not have felt this dissapointment. It's hard to describe just what feels off, but there's something in this book that makes it hard for me to get lost in it. Maybe it's because Shadow feels so detached emotionally and so I as a reader don't experience through him strong emotions regarding what's happening. Maybe it's because the side stories jarr me out. Or because the climax d

American Gods was imaginative, unique, thoughtful and thought provoking. After I finished reading I researched the book and the gods that it contained because i was so enamored by it.
I then presented it to my book group and although I knew most of them read little science fiction or fantasy I thought it was solid enough for anyone to read. I was very surprised that several of them either did not not like it or felt very lost in it.
