A stunning, self-assured debut novel. I loved the world and the systems of magic that Morgenstern created. The circus and its contents were beautifully described and the main characters were well depicted. I liked the ambiguity of the challenge and the adversaries. I found this to be a very mysterious and intriguing read. From the very first page I felt that it capture my attention and held me, somewhat lost at times with the story line, throughout the read. A circus that apppears one night and is gone by dawn of another, a magical romance, and a cast of interesting characters and unexpected events turned the Night Circus for me, into a GREAT read. I highly recommend the book and will read it again to absorb insights which I may have missed the first time ...more

I got 3/4 through this book and then realized I just didn't care about the characters. There certainly was a lot of atmosphere, but not a lot of plot. Also, I was put off by the way the story jumped around in time for no apparent reason. I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction, too, so I'm used to this sort of thing, but it felt a bit pretentious here. ...more

I am ambivalent about this book. I loved the actual writing itself: the imagery surrounding the circus was amazingly well-done and I really felt like I was there. However, the plot and character development wasn't strong enough to stand without the descriptions. Unfortunately, I'm the type of reader who wants ALL THE THINGS! I'm not disappointed I read the book, but if it had done more I probably would have really liked it.

I didn't dislike the book, but after reading so many reviews I thought that story would be much better. I thought the story was just ok. I believe there is a second book. I will try to read that as well as I am more interested in Bailey, Poppit and Widget's storyline. ...more
