I'm giving this five stars because it's a pure and simple joy of a story. No subplots, just one moment in one child's life, as viewed through the prism of adulthood. And a manta wolf, which gets one line of description but haunted my dreams last night. Manta wolf.

I have to admit that this is my first Gaiman. So, I popped my cherry...
I truly loved the way Gaiman tell the story. A man, in his midlife, a man who had passed many crises of life. With an unexpected journey, he suddenly has to visit all his forgotten childhood again. But actually it is not that forgotten, but sure it is a bit hazy. I read this novel with no expectation, so I just take what is coming. Initially it sounds just like a reminiscence of a childhood. But after some thought, it is more ...more

I have not been a big Neil Gaiman fan, but after this book I think that is about to change.
There were several elements of the story that resonated with me; nostalgia, childhood fears; adolescent pov and yes I even enjoyed the kitten. Most of all I enjoyed the idea of friendship that developed with our protagonist (seven year old boy) and the slightly older neighborhood girl. All in all a very imaginative and well told story.
It would not be a complete review without mentioning that I listened to ...more

This is the second book of Gaiman's that I've read. The first was American Gods. While I enjoyed American Gods (at least the second half of it) I didn't connect with this book.
The story is framed by the narrator returning to his childhood home some 40 years after the events in the book take place. The main part of the story takes places through the eyes of the 7 year old narrator. The framing of the narrative serves little purpose but to answer some of the more annoying questions left hanging. ...more

I have had very few real goals in life, which is kind of sad if you think about it. One, I always wanted to play guitar, and two, I wanted to create, in the written word or some form of making SOMETHING. I turned my attention in high school to writing.
I love blues and jazz guitar, but there is always someone that makes me want to lay my guitar down, quit making wounded cat noises and just listen.

Neil Gaiman obviously keeps his inner child on a short leash. I'm constantly amazed how he gets into the mindset and wonder of his young protagonists. This one is short, but creepy and beautiful.

This book haunted me when I wasn't reading it.
