What Members Thought

This book straight-up annoyed me. Thoughts I had while reading this:

1. This author is trying too hard and it shows. Instead of telling a story she's stringing together pretty words.

2. This book is so sweet. Now it's saccharine. Now it's cloying.

3. How long has Felicity known Jonah? Less than a month? And she's saying he "always" does this or "never" does that. Really?

4. I'd rather be reading Savvy.

5. I can't take another "What the hayseed?" or "Spindiddly!"

5. I'd rather be reading anything

I know lots of you did, but I didn't love it.

I couldn't keep the characters straight. And the seeing words thing seemed too precious. Plus, if she was such a poet, how come we didn't get to see any of her poetry? Not even at the end!

Spindidly written, delicious story full of magic, friendship and mystery. All ingredients were cooked incredibly and tasted so good! Look foward to more Lloyd's books! ...more

Grades 4-6. RL ?. Felicity's family has always been transient- moving from place to place. Who knew it might have had something to do with a curse from her hometown of Midnight Gulch? The family returns to Midnight Gulch, a place that claims to have snickers (or remnants) of magic. Felicity has always been different. She sees words everywhere she travels-- almost like a hint of what the people around her are thinking. In the town she discovers other magic. An ice cream that helps you remember. S ...more

Wouldn't have gotten past page 5 of this book as a child, but I kept reading since so many of my colleagues gave it 5*. What I can only describe as "sparkly writing" irritated me from the start, probably triggering a deep-seated aversion to being told to read "girl's books" way back when. The magic element seemed to keep people from facing life and pushed the plot toward a predictable ending... ...more

Sweet (maybe a little too sweet) book, but the plot felt a little thin and I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters. The repetition of certain phrases was fun and charming at first. In the end it was a happy laid-back book about magic.

There is a lot going on in this story of 12-year-old word-catcher Felicity Pickle--a quirky cast of characters, eccentric town folklore and the race to break her family's curse before her mother decides to leave town. Felicity is a sweet character that you root for until the end.

Read-alikes: Savvy, A Tangle of Knots, Beholding Bee.

I like the collection of words and encouragement of realizing amazing words are all around us. We all just need a blue notebook, but I really loved the last two chapters the best. Room 228 celebrated with eating ice cream and sharing their word notebooks. We all enjoyed our read aloud.

On the one hand, I liked the story. On the other hand, I thought it was kind of derivative, some of the language was annoying (spindiddly?), and it was another one adults will love to say kids should read, but kids won't go nuts for. So...Newbery? ...more

Like ice cream is best served cold, A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd is best read aloud so one can savor each magical word.
