This is the type of book I would want to take more time to savor than I currently have available, especially to read the poetry aloud. I was impressed by how Powell incorporated quotes and biographical facts into the poetry without breaking the feel of the form. Robinson's illustrations are all about the angles and the bright, saturated colors - especially that sunshiney yellow that pops off the page. The whole thing makes me want to seek out some of Josephine's recordings to see her in action m

This is an amazingly well-done biography. Josephine had extraordinary enthusiasm for dance and the text danced too. The words and illustrations combined to create a feeling of energy and excitement. It made me a bit breathless and tired too. I loved one of the lines, " 'Cause DANCIN' makes you HAPPY when nothin' else will." That totally reminded me of how I feel about my Zumba classes.

Read this for my "Resources for Children" class. Loved it! I'd never heard of Josephine Baker before and I missed out! This book made me want to go learn more about her incredible life. Fantastic illustrations and the text evoked a feeling of restlessness and dancing that matched Josephine's life perfectly. An easy, entertaining read. Recommended for all ages!

This was SO well done. Informative, entertaining...fantastic. Slap an award on this puppy.

This book is a delight to read, with text that flows like a free-verse jazz poem and appropriately holds the rhythm of a dance that darts and twirls across the page. Robinson’s gorgeous paintings are full of life and vivaciousness, rendered in vibrant, textured acrylic that pop right off the page. I think this makes a particularly great read for Women’s History Month (this month!), or for any reader interested in dance, lesser-known historical figures, or fearless women.
