Grades 4-7. Esther and her family live in Chicago during the Great Depression. The bread lines keep getting longer, but her family seems to be protected by her mother's ability to read signs and superstitions.

This book is receiving some Newbery buzz as of late, and rightfully so. I think it is everything a Newbery book should be. It definitely reads as a classic, and I think fans of books like Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables and Heidi might enjoy this tale of a Depression-era little girl forced to move from her beloved Chicago to a rinky-dink Wisconsin farmstead. This book was good but it was one of those that even though it was short took forever to read. I could walk away from it for days and then pick it up. It didn't keep me interested enough to keep reading and want to see what happens next. I did enjoy how it was family and how all families are different and how the girl comes to understand her mom.
