I love it when I find a book I can't put down. I read this in one sitting and it went by so fast, but in a good way, like I'm excited to read it again. It's pretty difficult to describe the plot, so I'll just say that it's exceptionally well written, moves at a great pace, and the characters leap off the page.
It also defies genre. I'd call it a mystery because Miranda, the 6th grade protagonist, tells the story as she's trying to figure it out, so the reader is there trying to figure it out wit ...more

I remember years ago when I read "The Westing Game" that the book knocked my socks off. Now I can't remember the story or tell you much about the book. Just that it knocked my socks off because the story was so well told and so tightly plotted. "When You Reach Me" is like that.
The author leads us slowly and surely through a mine field of "what's that?" and "what does that mean?" as she shows us the believable world of Miranda and the occasional unbelievable things that she encounters. I liked M ...more

What I said in 2009:
What can I say that hasn't already been said in a million positive reviews? It's one of those books that doesn't waste time on filler. It's neat and tidy and to the point, while still capturing something evocative about childhood. Despite all the mentions of A Wrinkle in Time, the pace of the adventure is a bit quieter here, but the mysteries of the story will be rewarding to readers who don't require a lot of excitement. Which isn't to say that the story isn't engaging - it ...more

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. Great read for boys and girls...probably middle school level. Don't really want to say much about it because it has a great twist at the end. But it does take place during my favorite year (1978) and there are references to The $20,000 Pyramid. Need I say more?? :)

Everyone told me this was a growing up, coming of age story with a twist at the end, which it is. The characters are very well drawn and the "twist" is well developed throughout the story. I figured it out way ahead of time, though, so I think that prevented me from loving the book as much as other people did.

You need to read A Wrinkle in Time to have any chance of understanding/enjoying this book. It's great. Made my brain explode a bit.

RL 750. This was a really fun story about Miranda, a girl growing up in the 1970s in New York City. Underlying this coming-of-age story is a mystery regarding strange notes being send to Miranda and a missing key.
I liked the realistic emotions surrounding the difficulty of Junior High in making and losing friends as your interests and values change.
But while most of this book could be labeled realistic fiction, there is a really neat science fiction twist. (Read Wrinkle in Time!!) Fun!

Wow, what a book! I stayed up late to finish it. I loved it so much that I can't even think about what my next read will be. I will definitely be reading this to my fifth graders. I may have to bring in a clip of $25,000 Pyramid to build their schema! This book has so many wonderful points for discussion. I also plan to use it for a mentor text for teaching writing.
