I started listening to this but had problems because I liked the female narrator but didn't think the male narrator filled my expectations of how this boy would sound/speak. Usually when I start an audio and don't finish it, I don't go back and read the book. But this time I did because I was interested in the characters, their interactions and how they were working (or not working) through their problems. I think it was worth the read. Some parts were well done - Finch's development, and I believed Violet's attraction to him, but I was also distracted by some stilted dialogue, Violet's quick change from the bell tower to being willing to ride in a car, and a few other little things. I can't decide if Finch's family was believably disfunctional or if his mom in particular was just too much. Violet's parents felt a little too textbook to be true. So unbelievably good, but so unbelievably sad. I listened to this on audio, and the narrators did a fantastic job telling Violet and Finch's story. The afterword, read by the author, makes the story that much more intimate and heartbreaking. I love this story. ...more

Violet and Theodore meet for the first time at top of a bell tower. They are both planning to jump to their deaths. Violet is having difficulty getting over her sister's death. Theo is having difficulty getting over the extreme physical abuse that he suffered from his father.
