It's a great picture book. However, I'm not happy it won the Newbery Award. There were so many deserving middle grade novels to choose from this year. I'm miffed. ...more

Such a sweet story of family and community. CJ is a real child with real grumblings and questions. Nana is a real nana with wisdom and caring. An extraordinary book with spare but exquisitely worded language. A picture book that is just wonderful. So deserving of the awards it won!

Excellent picture book. A grandmother showing, not telling, what is important.

A quiet, lovely book that reminds me of Ezra Jack Keats.

This book swept the American Library Association awards yesterday scoring a Caldecott Honor and shockingly - the Newbery! Nice little story of an African American boy and his grandmother taking a bus ride to volunteer in a soup kitchen. Authentic voice in African American vernacular.
