What Members Thought
Touching story about a boy and his fox with a satisfying and honest ending. This book has been an early entry on several Mock Newbery 2016 lists. It is worthy.
Jeez, here I go again, not really digging another big release of 2016 by an author I love (see my review of Raymie Nightingale). What is up? I don't know. Maybe I'm just not the right reader for such major bummer, sadsadsadness right now.
My biggest issue with this book is that the setting is completely ambiguous and I struggled with it throughout the book. When and where does it take place? In what world is there a little league game taking place a few miles from a war zone?

A heart wrenching story that unfolds right from the start but which asks important (and unanswerable) questions. This book was best for me as I read it together with my son - which blatantly has influenced my scoring. :)
Beautiful book but very tough to read. It was so so deeply sad. The pay off at the end is a bit uplifting, but not enough to make up for the pain you've suffered while reading. Still, this was Pennypacker's intention, I'm sure.

Yes, Pax is beautifully written and yes, I looked forward to reading this book from a well known and respected author. Yes, it will probably be considered for some major awards. Yes, I loved the foxes. Yes, I had to withold belief about Peter's journey and the lack of caring from his grandfather. Here's the question - will kids like this and read it? I'm not sure.

a beautifully written story about love and loyalty and letting go and moving on. What a great way to introduce such concepts to your children. Definitely one to be read together or at least talked about afterward.
Can't WAIT to read this aloud! So much to think and talk about.
