Jeez, here I go again, not really digging another big release of 2016 by an author I love (see my review of Raymie Nightingale). What is up? I don't know. Maybe I'm just not the right reader for such major bummer, sadsadsadness right now.
My biggest issue with this book is that the setting is completely ambiguous and I struggled with it throughout the book. When and where does it take place? In what world is there a little league game taking place a few miles from a war zone?

Beautiful book but very tough to read. It was so so deeply sad. The pay off at the end is a bit uplifting, but not enough to make up for the pain you've suffered while reading. Still, this was Pennypacker's intention, I'm sure.
Sheesh. It was bleak. In all honesty, as a librarian, I would have a hard time giving this to a kid, unless I knew the kid well enough to know that this book would help him/her through something or, more realistically, help him understand the darkness in the world and how ...more

Yes, Pax is beautifully written and yes, I looked forward to reading this book from a well known and respected author. Yes, it will probably be considered for some major awards. Yes, I loved the foxes. Yes, I had to withold belief about Peter's journey and the lack of caring from his grandfather. Here's the question - will kids like this and read it? I'm not sure.
