I had intense feelings of nostalgia while reading Peter Brown's first middle grade novel, The Wild Robot.
Roz's relationship with Brightbill and the rest of her forest friends brought back memories of Wilbur, Charlotte, and the whole barnyard gang.
Roz's fight for survival on the island reminded me of Brian and his hatchet.
Finally, Brown's futuristic setting had me thinking of the first time I read Lois Lowry's The Giver as a child.

Grades 3-5. A storm washes shipping containers ashore on a deserted island. All of the containers are smashed, but one. It contains a robot, which is accidentally activated by curious otters. What happens to a robot when there aren't humans to direct its behavior? It learns to serve the animals on the island and builds a life for itself.

Rozzum unit 7134 (AKA Roz) is a robot that is activated on an uninhabited island. She is programmed to "move, communicate and learn." Roz's story begins in a very analytical way - after all she is a robot - but as she moves, communicates and learns, she slowly pulls readers into an emotional journey only a robot can have. The Wild Robot is a unique story about otherness, finding your place and making your own family.

Peter Brown, author/illustrator of CREEPY CARROTS, MY TEACHER IS A MONSTER, and MR. TIGER GOES WILD has written his first middle grade novel. Roz the Robot is shipwrecked on a deserted island, well...not really deserted, lots of animals live there. She must learn to live in the wild. Kids will like this one. Cute animals, evil attack robots, and a lot of science to boot.

How could I fall in love with a robot and a goose? Again I wasn't expecting to love this book but I did. The community of animals and support for each other in tough circumstances was perfect. I was a little sad with the ending. However a mother would do anything for her son, correct?

My children (elementary age) and I struggled to decide if we recommend this book or not. It starts very slowly - although the descriptions are vivid and the plot is unique and thus kept our attention. The story became suddenly riveting around 22o pages in (a long time for a young reader) and then we couldn't put it down. Although the words at the end are hopeful, we all were left feeling doubtful and even hopeless. I'm glad that Peter Brown shared "A Note About The Story" at the end as it would
