Summerlost is a beautiful middle grade novel about friendship and family, grieving and belonging. I adore Cedar and Leo! And as a long-time attendee of the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City, Utah, I loved the familiarity of the setting inspired by author Ally Condie's hometown.

"I understood why Leo called the fountain Baby Niagara. Because once you see something big, you can't help seeing it in everything small" [page 161].

"You're my person" [page 237].

A year after losing her brother and father in an accident, Cedar and her mom and younger brother go back to her mother's home town for the summer to try to begin a new life. The town is famous for its Summerlost Shakespeare festival, and soon Summer has found a part time job selling concessions. She makes a new friend, Leo - who lives down the street. He understands the depth of her grief and never pushes her to talk about her father and brother, and Leo has his own problems as well. Together th ...more

This was a sweet middle-grade novel. I did feel like there were some things that weren't completely fleshed out, and I can't completely buy the fact that a couple of twelve-year-olds would be so mature: Cedar and her friend Leo have summer jobs, a lucrative side business, and they go around thinking things like "he's cute, but I don't want to be his girlfriend ... he's just "my person." But the story was nice enough. Squeaky clean, wholesome (even if the characters are watching soap operas in th ...more

4.5 stars. This was a wonderful middle grade book that touched on difficult themes yet was still hopeful and real. I loved the main characters Cedar and Leo and their friendship in the small town of Iron Creek working at a Shakespeare festival called Summerlost. Cedar deals with the death of her father and brother, while discovering friendship and healing. I would heartily recommend it to others!

Such a nostalgic book for me, a lovely commentary on dealing with death and developing new friendships.
